Jan 29

19th Jan:  My boss (Pippa) thought us Aussies would appreciate catching up with other Aussies in London – her step cousin and his fiancé in fact.  So, Kris, Gareth, Doug and I blindly turned up at Carluccio’s in Farringdon to meet some fellow Aussie expats.

They were a sweet couple and we enjoyed some authentic (apparently) Italian food and wine.

20th Jan:  Took Gareth and Kris to Covent Garden for shopping, strolled from there to Leicester Sq and on to Trafalgar Sq where the boys climbed the lions and we dodged the pigeons.

That night we walked along the Thames past the Tower Bridge and London Bridge to a pub overlooking the river, here Debby and Darryl met us for drinks. Afterwards we enjoyed dinner at Wagamama’s, finishing at Debby and Darryl’s in Shad Thames (Butler’s Warf) for more drinks!

21st Jan:  Doug and I met up with Darren (in town from Beijing), Dana, Ian and Alicia for lunch at the Bunker in Covent Garden.  Great to see old friends.

24th Jan:  Our first and probably last snow fall in London.  Woke up to London covered in a thick layer of snow – we caught some shots of the tree outside our flat in the hope we could take some the next day.  By lunch time all the snow was gone but it was lovely to crunch through the snow on my way to the bus and look out the window of the office at the snow covered roof tops!  Winter has truly arrived … it has been freezing for the past few days.

26th Jan:  Australia Day!

I baked a pavlova and gingerly carried it onto the bus, tucked it into my locker at the gym and unveiled it at work – intact.  Everyone was very impressed and now they want an Australia Day every month.  I got the usual jokes from David (Director) asking where the ‘tinnies’ were and the ‘prawns for the barbie’.  I proudly draped my Aussie flag over my chair for the day.

Darryl trying to mime gambling...That night with Kris and Gareth still at our place, Debby and Darryl came over and we enjoyed home cooked pizza and heaps of wine and scotch.  Then we played a hilarious game of Pictionary Mania (much more involved than the normal pictionary).

 Australia Day celebrations.

Got some shots of the Aussies in front of our flag.  Laughed until it hurt at Darryl trying to model Gareth into a man ‘Gambling’ and the boys drawing things on each others backs and drawing what they thought was being drawn on their back.  Such a great night with some lovely friends!

Kris and Gareth plan to move down the road, so nice to have a group of friends all so close – no tubes to get home when we catch up!

Kris and Jode in Borough Markets27th Jan:  Strolled to the Borough Markets where we picked up some yummy cheese and chocolates! Got some snaps of the peasants and rabbits strung up.

Caught the tube to Green Park and bought Doug some nice French-cuffed shirts in Jermyn St.

The Ritz, complete with Jag Limo !Walked past the Ritz and Doug had to get a photo of the Rolls out the front.  Then strolled through Green Park ending up in a pub for an afternoon drink.  Then on past Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and onto the bus home.

Last week I celebrated my 29th birthday!

Only 1 more year in my 20’s :(

D&J before dinner on Jodie's birthdayI was a brilliant London birthday.  It started Monday morning when Doug presented me with my birthday present a day early, he took a big risk and bought me a dress! But it is gorgeous, a Diane von Furstenburg (the original designer of the wrap dress), he picked it all on his own – disappearing on Saturday and braving the boutique stores in Notting Hill Gate.  I love my present and of course I wore it that night to dinner.

Doug had booked us into one of Gordon Ramsey’s restaurants in Sloane St. Knightsbridge.  We splashed out and caught a taxi so I could wear heels.  The restaurant was called, La Noisette, and was very posh.  The French cuisine was amazing, we were served many, tiny, courses – including servings of cheese slivered off blocks piled high on a trolley …. mmmm French cheese is good!

We enjoyed cocktails, French wine, mini desserts, big desserts … and much more.  At the end of the night the French waitor brought us our coats and hailed us a taxi – very nice!  So, I was completely spoilt!!!!

Then the next day (my birthday) I woke to another present from Doug – a gorgeous pink cashmere cardigan from Scotland, more clothes he bought all on his own!

Went to work that day where they gave me afternoon tea and cake.  After work a few of us went to ‘Brown Sugar’ for a drink.  Here the girls (Amanda, Yumi and Laura) presented me with a beautiful silk scarf – very sweet.

Headed home to greet Gareth and Kris who had just arrived from Aus and are staying with us until they find a flat.  We all headed out to ‘the Garrison’ where we met up with Amanda and Ben and Darryl and Debby for dinner.  Yummy food, great local pub and good friends.  I had a wonderful birthday – oh i did get off to a bad start that morning when I shed a few tears in the bedroom… my first homesick moment since I left.  This wasn’t helped by my family ringing from Toowoomba (Lou in town from Longreach and Fi up from Brissie) all merry after dinner out – typical of them to go out on my birthday without me and rub it in!!! No, it was so nice to hear from them all – wish they could have been here with me.

So yes, another year down – but I have a great feeling about this new one!

Apparently I’ve been slack at blogging and I need to fill in some blanks.

Tamara, Jodie and AgritaDec 29th 2006:

By chance in December, two of our good friends, Scott (Brissie) and Agrita (Brissie), were both passing through London.  Scott had been with family in Austria for Christmas and Agrita in the Uk visiting family.  So we took the opportunity to catch-up for dinner in Covent Garden.  Tamara, Doug, Scott, Agrita and I enjoyed dinner at Belgo’s . This was one of Rob and Jo’s favourites when they were in London and they took me here almost a year ago when I was in town.  Unfortunately this night the quaint old lift that carries you from the cobbled bar at street level to the cellar restaurant was broken, it wasn’t the same going down the stairs.  It was also the night that the Covent Garden water main burst and the toilets at Belgo’s were out of action! Classy.  But we had a good catch up and I have attached a photo of Tam, Agrita and I.

Doug & Jodie at Sommerset house8th Jan 2007:

Doug and I met after work and walked down from Holborn to the Strand where Sommerset House has an ice rink set up in the great court yard.  We have attached some blurry photos … We had lots of laughs, no stacks but some close calls.  We were ice skating in the grounds of a magnificent building on the banks of the Thames in London, sometimes we have to pinch ourselves to remember where we live!

10th Jan 2007:

I haven’t been to the ballet since I went with my mum to see the Nutcracker in Canberra when I was a little kid.  Being the girly girl I am, I thought it would be nice to drag Doug along for his first ballet experience, surprisingly he was excited (well he did a good job of feigning it).  We saw Giselle at the London Coliseum, the theatre itself is in the West End, I walked there from work and Doug met me.  The Coliseum is stunning, the ceiling covered in intricate carvings, velvet covered seats and curtains – seeing this alone was enough, literally! At the end of the ballet I turned to Doug and said ‘Did you like it?’, I almost believed him when he said ‘yes’ but even I thought it was boring in many parts and really dragged on .. so we spent the trip home paying out the 10 encores …’yes ok we get it, you’re great!’.  I think we’ll stick to the theatre.

11th Jan 2007:

Went out for drinks after work with my colleagues/alcoholics.  The Brown Sugar seems to have become our local.

12th Jan 2007:

Went out with Doug, Darryl and Debby to a cute little wine bar down a cobbled alley in Bank then onto the Grand Bazaar for a Turkish meal – more wine and lots of great conversation!

13th Jan 2007:

Doug and I met Darryl and Debby in Leicester Square, we ended up in SoHo eating Thai (more wine!!) and then to see the movie ‘The Prestige’ in Leicester Square.

DSC00761 (Large)14th Jan 2007:

Doug got his hair cut!!! Short! But it looks great!

We walked along the river past London Bridge and went to the Tate Modern Gallery.  Walked back and had lunch at one of our locals the Woolpack … soft drinks for us today!

Count down to Jodie’s birthday … 2 days!!!!! J

Doug and Jodie in the main loungeScotland Christmas tour.

Day 1 – 23rd of Dec

On the 22nd of December, we had to pick up our rental car, as the “Thrifty” rental shop was closed on the 23rd. After a short panic, based on the time difference between the free street parking and paid for parking, we parked the car just around the corner from the apartment.

We got underway at 6am on the morning of the 23rd. We tried to use the dodgy instructions from Google Maps, which got us a little lost. Well, it was either the dodgy maps or London’s dodgy streets. We eventually managed to get onto the M25 (the ring road around London). As we got up to speed, the car gave a huge jolt, and an error appeared on the dash board saying “Gearbox Fault”. We stopped the car and called AA. They arrived fairly promptly, but couldn’t really help. A simple man, with simple tools… have you looked under the hood of a modern car ??? To cut a VERY long story short, he couldn’t fix it, but tried to help by leading us to numerous closed thrifty branches. We got on the road and limped all the way to Heathrow. The people there gave us a smaller car, but it was brand new… how new ? It had 5 miles on the odometer. We EVENTUALLY got on the road, 5 hours later than we had set out.

Headed toward York, which was supposed to be our first stop, before driving to our lastminute.com bargain ! Due to the time we had lost, we drove through York, to get an idea of what we wanted to see, and promised to visit on the way back.

We drove to Aldwark Manor, which was the cheapest deal on lastminute.com. Oh my gosh ! It was amazing !!! An old English Manor, with it’s own golf course, fountain at the front and multiple fireplaces and lounges.

We took our bags to our room, and relaxed until just before dinner. We headed downstairs to sit near the fire in one of the lounges, to sample some of the local drops !

Dinner was fantastic, in an elevated restaurant, which by daylight, looked over the golf course.

Day 2 – 24th of Dec

We left the Manor early in the morning, not really knowing how long it would take to get to Dornoch. (Since the driving instructions were inaccurate). We drove past Glasgow, and headed toward Inverness (near the home of Nessy!) On the way, winding through the hills of Scotland, we past numerous Scotch distilleries, situated on loop road along the main roads. After driving for around 6 hours, we got to Dornoch. A quaint town, with a small population but steeped in tradition.

We took our bags to our room and proceeded to get ready for dinner. Dinner was included in the price of the package, and was fit for a king (& queen). After dinner, we sat around the fireplace in one of the lounges and sipped red wine. At 11pm, we headed across the road, to the site of a 6th century cathedral for carols. The cathedral was amazing, with stained glass windows and a very comfy feel. The carols ran for just over an hour to ring in Christmas.

Day 3 – 25th of Dec

It’s hard to believe that we woke up in the Castle, in Northern Scotland when we look back on the year we’ve had. We woke up and opened Christmas presents, which was great. We then called the family in Australia, to wish them a merry Christmas.

We got up and had breakfast (still full from the night before… and saving ourselves for the Christmas feast, that awaited us for lunch). We then spent some time walking around the town. We headed down to the beach/golf course. Along the way we saw frost on just about everything. We took some interesting photos, before seeing a bus full of tourists fish-tail and nearly lose control. We kept walking and saw the frosted golf course, and saw a camp site near the beach, which appeared to be flooded. Upon closer inspection, the pond/lake/flooding was frozen over. We climbed onto the edge of the ice and played like a couple of children, trying to get the ice to break. We headed down to the beach, which was amazing (again), the view of long grass along the beach, epitomised my idea of Scotland.

We headed back through the golf course grounds, and on to the Castle for lunch. The lunch, like the dinner, was huge and absolutely delicious.

Day 4 – 26th of Dec

We woke up and had breakfast (which wasn’t much as we could barely fit anything in after such big meals) and packed our bag. We said goodbye to the cat “Charles” and left the castle, bound for York. We drove passed the Glenmorangie distillery, and stopped to take a look. It was closed, but is was good to see where great scotch is made. We travelled down the length of Loch Ness ad stopped for some photos of Urqhart Castle ruins. We spent the rest of the day driving, as the scenic route took us way out of our way. We travelled down Loch Ness and through Fort William, all of which is really pretty. We got to York and stayed in a dodgy Novotel Hotel. For the money we paid, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. When travelling it’s a good idea to use Lastminute to find places to stay.

Day 5 – 27th of Dec

We woke up left for our self guided tour of York. We walked through the city (town) centre, looking at all the old buildings. We went into the York Minster which is absolutely amazing. There is so much to mention about it, it’s probably better that your search for the information yourselves. We had a great time, looking at the huge glass windows and stone work. We walked down the road to the start of the Wall. We got onto the wall by climbing an enclosed staircase, which also leads to the worlds smallest prison cell. Soon it was time to leave, and we began our ridiculously long journey home. It was meant to take around 3 hours, but ended up taking 6 hours. The traffic on the M1 was crazy. We had the handbrake up more times than I can remember (or want to). Wet weather, combined with road works (yes, over Christmas !) made it feel like we were driving back from the Sunshine Coast on a Sunday afternoon.

Overall, it was a fantastic holiday and I can’t wait to go again.Â
